3D Rocket Cake

This year the boy who has everything asked for a Rocket cake to celebrate his 5th birthday. 3D of course. Here goes...

First the cake recipe so next time I'll remember. (Why don't I ever write these things down?)

185 g butter
1 cup caster sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
2 cups SR flour
1/4 cup milk.

Beat the sugar, butter and vanilla with electric beater, add egg one at a time and beat well after adding each. Sift flour into the mix and add milk.

Bake at 180 degrees. Depending on the tin size, cooking times will vary.

I'm using a 10cm diameter cake tin.

The first stage. I layered vanilla and chocolate butter cakes. Unfortunately I decided to use cream cheese frosting between these cakes. Bad move because it doesn't set well like standard butter cream. But it does taste good. I created a base for the rocket and there is a dowel rod in the middle to support the rocket.

I made some standard cookie dough and added more sugar to the recipe than recommended and cut the wings of the rocket. The extra sugar makes the cookie stronger and less crumbly. I just wedged the wings into the sides of the cake and they stayed in with no problems.

Fiddly with the decorating, especially when the layers were moving because of the cream cheese between the layers. But in the end, I was pretty happy with the result. If I ever made this again, I would use a harder setting frosting between the layers and work a bit harder on fixing my dowel to the base properly.

Ariel mermaid cake

A young friend of mine was having her 3rd birthday party in the park and wanted a mermaid cake, well actually an Ariel cake. I was a bit pressed for time with this one and held back my inner urge to attempt something 3D. I hired the cake tin from Cupid's for $5 and decided to use a packet cake (which I won't ever do again). Much quicker than 3D cakes.

3D Gingerbread Fire Engine

In Norway at Christmas it is traditional to make a gingerbread house and display it in your house. Last year we went to IKEA and bought one in a box and made it, but it was a bit boring. So this year we had a bigger plan. A fire engine made of gingerbread. It even tasted good!

3D Big wheeler 4WD cake

A friend of my son was having his 3rd birthday and he really wanted a pink big wheel 4WD cake. So when he came to me and asked me to make him a cake I couldn't resist. I mean, how often would you get the chance to make a pink car cake? Here's what happened.

3D Excavator cake - THE DIGGER

The boy who has everything wanted "an excavator....no, a police car"........ cake for his birthday. For the month leading up to his birthday I asked him almost daily what cake he wanted . And it was pretty clear there were only 2 contenders but it was impossible to get him to decide on one. The excavator seemed easy enough....oh yeah, except for the arm. The there was the police car. Could probably handle that one too. Then I discovered a 3d car cake tin on ebay. Decision made right? Well anyway, somewhere along the way I decided just to make them both.

3D Teddy Bear Cakes

For my daughters first birthday I thought it would be nice to make a teddy bear cake. As usual I set my sites on making it 3D. Luckily I was trawling through ebay one day and discovered the wonderful Wilton 3D teddy bear cake tin. Not quite as easy as it looks. Don't forget to grease and flour the tin very well:)

Anyway, I got a bit famous for this cake. So when a friend needed a cake to take to daycare, I was asked to make another one. I think I really cracked it the second time around!
